Cyanide hazards to plants and animals from gold mining

Let us have this discussion. This is one topic that is very dear and close to our hearts. We only have one world and it is everyone’s duty to protect it from pollution.

Of main concern is all those millions of litres of alkaline water containing high concentrations of potentially toxic sodium cyanide (NaCN) being used to extract gold from high and low grade gold ores. Most of these processes result in tailing ponds that are up to 150 ha and larger in area. It is the spillages from these ponds, either by accident or design that result in water bodies hazardous to wildlife. Accidental spills of cyanide solutions into rivers and streams have produced massive kills of fish and other aquatic animals. Ground water contamination has also been observed and that is how some of these cyanide metal complexes find their way to our fruits and vegetables (via ground-water irrigation).

That is why we, at Crane and Harvard Consulting Engineers are introducing an eco-friendly reagent that can be used as replacement for toxic sodium cyanide during gold extraction.. Not only is the reagent safer from an environmental point of view, it is also cheaper than Sodium Cyanide.

There is no reason why the gold mining industry should not embrace the change and save the world.
